ROOTSTOCK: Health Information
Why "rootstock": Our logo includes a rootstock which feeds the grass roots at the top of the logo and connects them to the pathways design at the bottom of the logo. The rootstocks symbol represents knowledge and emphasizes the role that accurate health information plays in strengthening our project.
preCommunity* Knowledge
In the Champlain Region (Ottawa and surrounding counties), there is a wealth of local knowledge on trans-related health care. This knowledge is collectively produced and shared within our communities. Individuals source medical equipment, recommend health providers, and offer/receive advice for wellness, recovery, prevention, and harm reduction. Foundations & Pathways Ottawa (FPO) relies on this community wisdom and, when the information can be verified and validated, will share this information with service users. On occasion, a peer supporter may provide information that diverges from the FPO knowledge base. Please feel free to check with staff if you prefer to double check any information you get from the program.
*Community here refers to interconnected people of trans and gender diverse experience and their loved ones who exchange ideas, concepts, and resources.
e-Library:
This will be an online database of bibliographic references on trans health care from peer-reviewed papers and grey literature (available 2018). Topics will include:
Evidence from WPATH
Two THIO organizers have completed the Foundations Course and one has completed advanced courses from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH)'s Global Education Initiative (GEI). We are happy to share this information with service users.
Evaluating Quality of Information:
There is variation in the quality of research conducted on trans health. It can be hard to know whose expertise to trust and which studies have produced meaningful results. If you are confused or overwhelmed by the information out there, feel free to get in touch to chat about it.
